Description / Properties

Aluminium Hydroxide Gel BP 300mg Filmacid is an antacid-antiflatulent agent containing a balanced combination of: Aluminium Hydroxide Gel B.P.C./B.P 150mg Simethicone U.S.P. 125mg

Indications

Filmacid is indicated as an adjunct in the treatment of peptic ulcer, gastric hyperacidity, gastritis with meteorism, belching, flatulence and heartburn. It is also useful in post-operative conditions with meteorism.

Contraindication

Filmacid is contraindicated in patients with hypochlorhydria, pyloric stenosis and renal insufficiency. It is also contraindicated in severely debilitated patients. Patients receiving any form of tetracycline should not be given with Filmacid, since the absorption of the antibiotic will be inhibited.

Drug Interactions

It is usually advisable to avoid concurrent administration of antacids and other drugs. The binding properties of aluminum hydroxide may interfere the absorption of certain drugs including tetracycline thus inhibiting their effectiveness

Side Effects

The aluminium chloride salt is insoluble and can cause constipation. Magnesium Hydrochloride is relatively insoluble and may cause diarrhea. Also has risk of accumulation in patients with renal insufficiency. However, Filmacid due to its balanced combination rarely causes constipation or diarrhea.

Warning and Precautions

Uncontrolled use of this medication may cause constipation.

Dosage

One to two 5ml spoonfuls, three to four times daily after meals.
