Milk Thistle extract (Silymarin 420mg)

Product Descriptions and Properties

Hepatocare (Milk thistle) contains silymarin, a mixture of flavonoid components (silybin, silidanin and silichristine) that exert significant anti oxidant and liver-protecting effects. Silymarin is at least ten times more potent in antioxidant activity than vitamin E and also increases the liver's own antioxidant, glutathione by over 35 percent."

Pharmacokinetics

Silymarin is not water soluble, making liquid preparations ineffective; therefore it is usually administered orally in encapsulated form. Because absorption of silymarin from gastrointestinal tract is only moderate (23-47%),it is best administered as a standardized extract of 70-80% silyarin. In animals and humans, peak plasma levels are reached in four to six hours after an oral dose. Silymarin is excreted primarily via the bile but some clearance is also achieved via the kidneys. The clearance half-life of Silymarin is six to eight hours.

Pharmacodynamic

Hepatocare alters structure of outer cell membrane of hepatocytes to prevent penetration of liver toxin into the liver and formation of new hepatocytes. Silyamin's hepatoprotective effects are accompalished via several mechanisms including anti-oxidation, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, enhanced liver detoxification and enhanced glucuronidation and protection of glutathione depletion.

Indications

Liver disorders such as cirrhosis, acute hepatitis, alcohol or toxic chemical induced hepatitis and protective effect in chemotherapy of tuberculosis.

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to (Milk Thistle / sliymarin) or other related chemical preparations.
