Metrozine

Description / Properties

Metrozine is a nitromidazole derivative for protozoal and anaerobic infections.

Indications

All forms of amoebiasis, amoebic liver abscess, symptom less cyst passers, giardiasis, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, acute ulcerative gingivitis, pericoronitis, periodontitis, prophylaxis and treatment of anaerobic infections. Metrozine injection RFU is indicated in intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections, bacterial septicemia, skin and skin structure infections, endocarditis, bone and joint infections, lower RTI, CNS infections, and colorectal surgery.

Contraindication

Known hypersensitivity to Metronidazole, first trimester of pregnancy. Metrozine is contraindicated in patients with history or evidence of blood dyscrasia.

Drug Interactions

Metronidazole has been reported to potentiate the activity of warfarin and other oral coumarin anticoagulants. There is no interaction with heparin.

Side Effects

Metrozine is well tolerated and no serious adverse reaction has been reported. There have been occasional reports of an unpleasant taste in the mouth, furred tongue, nausea, vomiting and gastro-intestinal disturbances. A few instances of peripheral neuropathy have been reported during long-term therapy. A moderate leucopoenia has also been reported but white cell count has always returned to normal levels after the treatment has been completed.

Warning and Precautions

If possible when treating anaerobic infections susceptibility tests should be performed. Alcoholic beverages should not be consumed during Metronidazole therapy. Metronidazole crosses the placental barrier and enters the fetal circulation. Drug also appears in breast milk in concentration similar to those found in plasma

Dosage

Acute intestinal and other extra intestinal amoebiasis Adults: 400mg t.i.d. for 5-10 days. Children: approx 35-50 mg/kg/day in three divided doses. Giardiasis and acute dental infections or ulcerative gingivitis: Adult: one 400mg tablet two times daily for 5-10 days for giardiasis and 3-5 days for acute ulcerative gingivitis. Children: approx 15mg/kg/day in three divided doses. Trichomoniasis: one 400mg tablet two times daily for 5-10 days. For Metrozine injection RFU: Loading dose: 15mg/kg infused over one hour approx. 1 gram for a 70kg adult. Maintenance dose: 7.5 mg/kg infused over one hour every six hours. Approx 500mg for 70kg adult.

Metrozine Suspension: Bottle containing 60ml of suspension.

Metrozine injection RFU: 100ml glass vial.

Metrozine 200mg Tablets: Round, blue, film coated engraved ‘Searle’ on one side, each containing Metronidazole B.P. 200mg. Metrozine 400mg Tablets: Oblong blue, film coated tablets engraved ‘Searle’ on one side, each containing Metronidazole B.P. 400mg.

Injection
Metrozine Injection RFU: Sterile non-pyrogenic isotonic and ready for use solution, containing 500mg Metronidazole in 100ml(5mg/ml).

Suspension
Metrozine Suspension: Salmon colored suspension with sweet orange flavor containing Metronidazole benzoate equivalent of Metronidazole B.P. 200mg in each 5ml.
