Description / Properties

  • Dilates the bronchi by relaxing smooth muscle
  • Central nervous system stimulant
  • Cardiac stimulant
  • Bronchial reagin antagonist via inhibition of mast cell degranulation
  • Diuretic action

    Indications

  • Asthma with paroxysmal dyspnoea
  • Asthma with continuous dyspnoea
  • Spastic form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

    Contraindication

  • Children under 3 years of age
  • Intolerance to theophylline
  • Combination with Enoxacin

    Drug Interactions

    Contraindicated with Enoxacin, as it increases blood theophylline levels with risk of over dosage.

    Inadvisable combinations include Erythromycin & Viloxazine.

    Combinations requiring precautions includes, Cimetidine, Ciprofloxacin, Norfloxacin, Pefloxacin, Fluconazole, Fluvoxamine, Mexiletine and Ticlopidine.

    Side Effects

  • Nausea, vomiting, epigastirc pain.
  • Headache, excitation, insomnia
  • Tachycardia

    Warning and Precautions

    This product should be used very cautiously in young children, who are extremely sensitive to the action of xanthines. In view of the high degree of interindividual variation in the metabolism of theophylline, the dosage should be adapted on the basis of adverse reactions and/or blood levels.

    This product should be used with caution in cases of: heart failure, impaired liver function and coronary insufficiency.

    Dosage

    Adults: Usual doses: up to 13 mg/kg/24 hours, in two divided doses. The dosage should be established gradually over a period of 8 days.
