[Glyceryl Trinitrate]
Description / Properties
Sustac (Glyceryl Trinitrate) is a vasodialator (expands the blood vessels). Glyceryl Trinitrate is used for symptomatic or prophylactic treatment of angina, to treat cardiac failure and during hypotensive or cardiac surgery to prevent myocardial infarction.
Indications
Prophylactic therapy of angina pectoris whether complicated or associated with previous myocardial infarction.
Side Effects
Side effects include facial flushing, and headache. Toxic effects of Glyceryl Trinitrate include vomiting, cyanosis and syncope. Use in pregnancy is contraindicated. Warning: abrupt withdrawal may lead to exacerbation of symptoms.
Warning and Precautions
Excessive use of glyceryl trinitrate may cause headache, so reduce the dose & use analgesics (painkiller). Patients with gastrointestinal (GI) hypermotality or malabsorption syndrome should take oral or sublingual sustained release capsules rather than tablets. In terminating treatment of angina, gradually reduced the dose in order to avoid withdrawal reactions. It should not be used in patients with severe hypotension, hypovolaemia marked anemia, heart failure due to obstruction, raised intracranial pressure or angle closure glaucoma. It should be used with caution in patients with impaired kidney or liver function or hypothyroidism.
Dosage
Mild angina: 2.6 mg one tablet twice or thrice daily.
Moderate to severe angina: 6.4 mg one tablet twice or thrice daily.
Sustac must be taken between meals and swallowed whole. They are not for sublingual administration.
